Which is the best material for Patio Umbrellas?
I want to know that, which is the best material for patio umbrellas? I have 3 options for that but want to know more about it.
1. Polyurethane-coated Polyester
2. Acrylic
3. Canvas
![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)
gardencentres answers:
Acrylic. It’s water-resistant And fade-resistant plus they come in lots of color options. So they’re actually great on patio umbrellas. Canvas isn’t so water-resistant and you can have a flame/fire issue with polyurethane-coated polyester.

Why aren’t patio umbrellas built durable to wind?
If there’s anymore than a mild breeze I can’t put the thing up, the stupid thing looks like it’ll fall apart. paid $100 bucks for it, I have a 40 lb base and a wrought iron patio set it’s in. one time the wind pulled it straight out of the base & the table, and i didn’t even notice a breeze!
![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)
gardencentres answers:
Unfortunately, price is no guarantee of quality, but you must consider how often it is windy and how strong the wind blows where you live. Wind is the bane of umbrellas everywhere. Most sites selling patio umbrellas state that you should protect your umbrella from constant wind. If you live in a windy area you probably don’t see many umbrellas used at commercial ventures, such as restaurants with outdoor seating.
To prevent your umbrella from being pulled up and out of its base and table you should consider adding some sort of locking mechanism. Many bases I looked at had a set screw to tighten against the inserted pole. See 1st link. Bases without this feature aren’t worth the money. Drill a hole through both the upright stem of the base and the center pole of the umbrella. Insert the umbrella pole into the base stem, line up the drilled holes and put a bolt through them. Add a washer and nut, and tighten. The bolt should probably not be wider than 3/8 inch, and this size depends on how thick and of what material the umbrella pole is made. Too large a drilled hole can weaken a wooden pole. Alternately, you may be able to attach the pole to the table in a similar manner by placing a bolt below the table cross brace. See 2nd link.
There are wind resistant patio umbrellas, but they are 3 times more expensive than the one you bought. Otherwise, a windbreak is the best protection for an umbrella. Either a tall hedge (many years to achieve),or a tall fence or trellis that cuts the main force of the prevailing wind are your choices.

Who repairs patio umbrellas? Upholstery? awning shops?
I cannot find any “umbrella repair” shops in the yellow pages of my small city, It is in exellent condition, just the wind took it and inverted it and the little wire that hold them spokes all into place came out, I fought with it for 3 hours trying to line everything up and I cannot do it, I would rather pay an expert to put it back together before I pull my ****ing hair out

No store. You need a person who knows a lot about a lot of things. Maybe a handyperson? It’s possible that it’s not repairable.

What is better for barbecue, spare ribs or baby back ribs?

![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)

They are both good but if you want some really good ribs try to see if your local store has ST Louis style ribs. To me they are the ultimate in ribs and are always tender and good. I make my own rubs but anybody can make a good rub. I use garlic and onion powder (not salt) and then some crushed dry parsley and some chili powder and a little seasoned meat tenderizer or just seasoning salt but not too much and spread over the ribs liberally and bake at 300 for like 2 hours or til tender and done and they will be delish.

Why shouldn’t one smoke pork ribs with just barbecue sauce?
Do you really need a rub? They both pretty much have the same ingredients except tomato paste and vinegar. You end up slathering it on when there done anyway. If you like sauce on your ribs of course, I know many people don’t.
![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)

I don’t put anything on them while they are cooking. The smoke give them the flavor. When eating them I like to dip them in sauce., not slather it on.That is the traditional way.Rubs and marinating are new inventions so food companies can make more money.

![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)
gardencentres answers:
Your buddy’s a moron. Slow smoked pork spare ribs are one of the best things in life. I own a bbq joint and probably make the best brisket on the planet but I still prefer ribs. I actually won a state bbq tournament with my ribs (brisket too for that matter). But the ribs..oooh baby.
Remember, slow is good. Never hurry bbq. Always keep the heat low so as not to boil the meat (about 200*F and cook it slow with a hard wood, flipping it every hour or so. I prefer pecan. Sauce goes on the side if you want it at all. Some folks like it on the meat and that’s cool. If so, wait til the ribs are nearly done before adding it. Burned sauce is an evil thing. Dry rubs work okay for pre-seasoning meat. A mix of apple cider vinegar, chipotle, honey and spices makes the best sauce in my opinion..
Ribs can be cooked fast but you better really know what you’re doing. Keep an eye on ‘em or they’ll burn and dry out. Not good.
When the rack is limber and the bone turns in the meat they’re ready.

How to kill flies in my vegetable garden?
Its been raining the past few days and all of a sudden there are tons of flies in my vegetable garden! They don’t seem to be flying around the dog poop much, but more towards the vegetable garden. How do I get rid of the flies without damaging my vegies, preferably without using harmful chemicals?
![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)
gardencentres answers:
My guess is you used manure in your soil & that’s where the flies laid their eggs & completed their cycle in the ground. The rain just speeded up the process – they’ll fly away. In the meantime don’t add anymore manure, and be sure and remove any fallen fruits or veggies that will attract them.

Where are you? How long are you into the growing season? It could be water, too much on the leaves and not enough getting to the roots, water on the leaves mixed with direct sunlight, the end of the growing period for some vegetables, and perhaps questions with fertilizer.

Vegetable composting: is it safe to compost the ink on paper coming from computer printers?
how about the ink on cash register receipts from the store? how about the ink on cereal boxes and other packaging? what about the glue in corrugated cardboard boxes? This compost is for vegetable gardening.
![Your Questions About [gardening] farmer21 Your Questions About [gardening]](http://www.gardencentresblog.com/wp-content/uploads/farmer21.jpg)
gardencentres answers:
Pigments combine with a “vehicle” and a “binder” to create specific inks for various printing projects. The pigment and the vehicle are the bad boys. Paper composting and mulching is haunted by the specter of the heavy metals used as pigment in commercial inks in the past. For years, the vehicle was petroleum-based, but the industry is slowly switching over to soy- or vegetable-based inks. However, inks labeled “soy-based” are still permitted (and likely) to contain some amount of petroleum.
Pigments themselves still contain heavy metals such as zinc and copper, although overall amounts of heavy metals have been reduced. Although toxins are present in quite small amounts, all the sources I consulted agreed that contemporary printed newsprint, including colored newsprint, and cardboard boxes are safe for garden use. Glossy inserts, shiny ink of any sort, magazines, and colored paper do not make appropriate compost or mulch materials, due to a higher prevalence of toxics within the paper and ink, and likelihood of “de-inking” (ink sliding off the paper into your garden).
One further thing: If you’re gardening in an urban or suburban area, ink is a drop in the contamination bucket. It’s far more likely that your soil will be contaminated by other sources, such as lead paint, pavement runoff, or car exhaust that washes from building walls into the soil. Get your soil tested for heavy metals before food gardening and avoid food gardening within 10 feet of a building. What is toxic is often invisible to the eye.

How to prevent cats from urinating on vegetable garden?
I just created a small vegetable garden on my property. I looked outside the other day by chance and noticed one of the neighbourhood cats had entered the garden and urinated on some of the tomato plants. I don’t want to be eating these vegetables that have been soaked or “flavoured” with cat urine. Any ideas on how to keep them out?

gardencentres answers:
Many of these things are old wives tales. We own a few cats. My brothers siamese used to spray on my moms roses. We tried everything from orange skins, to commercial cat deterrent sprays but nothing worked ( the poor cat, who was show material even got neutered) our vet said it had something to do with the ammonia in the fertilizer and the fact that cats are territorial and will spray to mark territory. What we found that really worked was making sure that the beds were always wet and then we wet the grass/ paving. Stones around the beds. Cats hate their paws to be wet, my dad discovered that the cats detested citronella oil, so now we spray the area down with water and citronella oil. The oil doesnt wash away like other water based products and with the ground being wet the cat will soon leave the spot. IF YOU CATCH THE CAT AND U CAN WET IT EVEN BETTER. THEY SOON LEARN
